TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – There was some recent statewide recognition for the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

The recognition from ViTal was for the department’s work in responding to mental health calls.

ViTal works with state agencies on research, training, and education on improving mental health wellness.

TPD was one of only two departments in the state to receive the recognition.

“ViTal did an excellent job for us as far as our training and making sure our officers are trained well and know how to handle mental illness. In my 30 years in law enforcement, there’ve been several incidents we needed training on. This training helped us know how to approach different situations when it comes to mental illness within our community. It was very vital to our department,” said interim police chief Sebo Sanders.

Sanders said the Tuscaloosa Police Department has a 12-member team that focuses on mental health calls.
