HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A man accused of killing a Maui police officer last August must undergo a mental health exam before his trial can begin.

Clembert Alii Kaneholani, 38, is accused of fatally shooting Officer Suzanne O as she and other officers were responding to a terroristic threatening call in Paia Friday, Aug. 15, 2025.

Kaneholani, a convicted felon, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and multiple firearms offenses.

He pleaded not guilty to those charges in court Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025.

Kaneholani’s defense team requested that the suspect take a mental health exam before the trial begins. On Monday, a judge granted their request.

Court documents said Kaneholani will be examined at the Maui Community Correctional Center. The examiner must turn in a report with their findings no later than June 10.

Kaneholani was ordered to return to court on June 17.
