PEORIA (25News Now) – Voters in Livingston County decided on a measure that could change how local schools spend tax revenue.
The proposition on the primary ballot asked to expand the use of the current 1% school facility sales tax. Now approved, districts can use the money to hire school resource officers and mental health professionals.
Currently, the funds are restricted to building improvements and maintenance.
Supporters said this would provide steady funding for student safety and wellness without raising taxes.
Critics argued the tax was originally intended only for property upkeep, not for paying personnel.
