LA GRANDE – (Release from the Northeast Oregon Health Education Center) High school students interested in health careers have only a short time left to apply for Rural MedQuest, an award-winning summer camp that introduces students to careers in health care through hands-on experiences and job shadowing.
Hosted by the Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Rural MedQuest is a free, nationally recognized program that brings students together with health professionals from across Eastern Oregon.
During the six-day camp, students explore a wide range of health care careers while gaining practical skills and connecting with mentors in the field.
A sneak peek at the camp experience includes:
Job shadowing with health care professionals
Learning clinical skills such as taking vital signs, suturing and CPR
Emergency medical services training with local fire and EMS teams
Simulation exercises using pediatric training manikins
Skills training at the OHSU School of Nursing
Oral health and behavioral health workshops
Team-building activities and mentorship with health care professionals
The camp concludes with a celebration and wrap-up where families are invited to attend.
Rural MedQuest has received national, state and local recognition for its impact on the future health care workforce, helping students from rural communities explore careers in medicine, nursing, emergency care, dentistry, behavioral health and other health professions.
