A leading addiction spec­ialist has said it is “inevitable” that Irish people will try to take legal action against social media companies over the harm that online content can cause to their mental health.

Consultant psychiatrist Colin O’Gara was speaking to the Sunday Independent after a landmark court ruling in the US found that both Meta and YouTube were liable for deliberately designing addictive products that hooked a young user and led her to develop social phobia, body dysmorphia and depression.
