Mud was everywhere on a cool Saturday morning as more than 600 Laredoans took part in the second annual “Down and Dirtier” event known as Laredo Mud Fiesta 2.0.

The obstacle-style event focuses on promoting mental health awareness and preventing suicide among veterans and their families.

Participants of all ages — including families, children and veterans — navigated muddy courses and team challenges designed to encourage connection, resilience and support.

Organizers said the event’s mission centers on raising awareness about suicide prevention, particularly among veterans, while creating a space for healing and community engagement.

Eric Castillo, a child find coordinator with ECI Project Niños, said the event highlights the importance of unity and support.

“I’ve seen so much growth in our community, and I’m so proud of being a part of this,” Castillo said. “Everybody needs help — from little kids to adults. This shows people they’re not alone.”

Event organizer and veteran Rousky described the Mud Fiesta as a way to bring people together and open conversations about mental health.

“We want people to know they’re not alone,” he said.

Castillo said events like this help build a sense of belonging and encourage people to stay active and connected.

“This is what it’s all about,” he said. “Creating that lifeline for others.”
