Mental Health Facility Expansion
VICTORIA COUNTY, Texas – With a new mental health facility under construction in Victoria county, leaders say they’re looking to get the most out of every dollar — and every bed.
County judge Ben Zeller says the $40 million project was originally planned as a 50-bed facility.
But now, officials say there’s room to expand to 60 beds — something Zeller calls necessary, even though it would push costs higher.
“Our priority has been to get the maximum number of beds possible in this project, which is about 60. however, pushing it to that level brings the total project cost to $42 million. so what we are working on is closing that funding gap, either by looking to reduce costs or to increase our level of funding. our goal is to provide the maximum number of beds possible,” said Zeller.
The Victoria County Mental Health Facility is scheduled to open around October 2027. The facility is located on Big Bend drive near the Victoria Regional Airport.
