MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) – To kick off Autism Acceptance Month, Monticello police and the Piatt County Mental Health Center have partnered for the Blue Envelope Program.

According to the City of Monticello, the program will help police communicate more easily with drivers on the autism spectrum during traffic stops.

The City added that those drivers can use the envelopes to store important documents, along with contact information for a support person.

The Springfield Police Department was another central Illinois city that adopted the Blue Envelope Program

Envelopes can be picked up at the Piatt County Mental Health Center, Monticello Police Department, Monticello Municipal Building and the Allerton Public Library.

The program is free and voluntary, and no registration or proof of diagnosis is necessary.
