CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Caring for a loved one can take a toll, and local organizers say finding support is critical to protecting caregivers’ mental health and wellness.

Life Enriching Communities is inviting caregivers and community members to save the date for its next “Caring for the Caregiver” town hall at Twin Towers on Hamilton Avenue. The event is scheduled for June 25th and is free. Organizers said it will include food, information and resources for support.

Twin Towers, part of Life Enriching Communities, offers a range of programs aimed at easing caregiving stress and promoting healthy aging, including activities focused on eating and aging well and gardening. The location also hosts classes such as cooking programs. Many of the programs are open to community members.

Shannon Fitzwater, director of home services for Life Enriching Communities at Twin Towers and Twin Lakes, said both communities provide support groups that are open to the public.

“Both of those communities offer support groups – dementia related, as well as just general caregiving support groups that are offered to the community,” Fitzwater said.

Fitzwater said some people may not realize they qualify as caregivers.

“If you are supporting a loved one daily with medications or assisting with appointments, you are a caregiver and we have found that caregivers can easily burn out,” she said.

To help reduce burnout, Fitzwater encouraged caregivers to seek help when possible and make time for their own well-being.

“It’s important to keep yourself healthy and well if you’re going to be caring for someone and we offer a variety of activities,” she said.
