(ABC 6 News) – A judge is questioning whether an Albert Lea man accused of attacking someone with a meat cleaver is competent to stand trial.

After a hearing on April 1st, a judge ordered a competency examination for 45-year-old Paul Everett David, who is facing assault charges.

Court documents allege that David struck someone in the head with a meat cleaver before fleeing into the woods on March 21st. He remains in custody.

The judge’s order means that criminal proceedings for David are suspended until he is deemed mentally competent to stand trial or not. A forensic navigator will be appointed to assess his competency, and submit a written report to the court within 30 days.
