Health experts are reporting an uptick in COVID cases and upper respiratory viruses. They are also seeing some colds and strep throat as we head farther into the fall season.

What can you do to stay healthy? Experts say it starts with what you eat.

The foods we eat can have a major impact on our ability to fight off infections that will inevitably come our way in the next few months.

Health experts say there are lots of nutrient-rich fall foods that can help support your immune system and help you stay healthy.

1. Garlic is an immune system powerhouse. Experts say garlic appears to stimulate and regulate the functioning of white blood cells, cytokines and immunoglobulins. Regular consumption can contribute to the treatment and prevention of respiratory infections.

2. Pumpkin – You see them everywhere! Pumpkins are loaded with vitamin A, which is beneficial for the immune system and skin. Additionally, they provide vitamin C, fiber and potassium. But pumpkin-flavored items don’t necessarily have any nutritional benefits. Instead try adding cinnamon, nutmeg and clove to your coffee or tea. These spices have anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Apples – Turns out an apple a day might just keep the doctor away. Apples are high in fiber and vitamin C. They also contain antioxidants, and vitamin E.

4. Nuts and seeds – Fall is the season for nuts and seeds such as walnuts and pumpkin seeds. These are loaded with healthy fats, proteins, and nutrients such as zinc, iron, magnesium and vitamin E, which support immunity.

5. Berries such as cranberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. Many berries have antioxidant properties and may help promote heart health.

6. Leafy greens – Dark vegetables such as spinach, kale and collard greens are known to have high levels of vitamin C along with antioxidants and beta carotene, all of which help fight infection.

Also add to the list ginger, citrus fruits and fish oil.
