EL CAJON (FOX 5/KUSI) — The county is opening the first Crisis Stabilization Unit in the East County on Monday.

The 14,000-square-foot behavioral health treatment facility will provide 24-hour support seven days a week for people experiencing a psychiatric or substance use emergency.

The facility is located in El Cajon, at the corner of S. Magnolia and West Douglas avenues.

It will provide immediate care for people going through a crisis and also connect them with services for ongoing treatment.

Individuals can stay at the facility for up to 24 hours. The county said the facility provides a community-based, more effective option than emergency departments, hospitals or jails for someone going through a crisis.

The new facility cost $28 million and will be the eighth County Crisis Stabilization Unit in the county.

The new facility is part of a recent effort to expand behavioral health resources in San Diego, which includes building a new $210 million Behavioral Health Wellness Campus on Rosecrans Street.
