A York learning center is using nature and outdoor classrooms to support children’s mental health and evolving educational needs.

YORK, Pa. — As education continues to evolve, schools are finding new ways to adapt to the changing needs of students and in York, that shift is happening outside.

York Day Early Learning has officially opened a new outdoor classroom and nature center, designed to give children more opportunities to learn through exploration and play.

The space encourages hands-on experiences while also supporting students’ emotional well-being. Leaders at the center told FOX43 that research consistently shows children benefit from spending more time outdoors, often displaying more stable behavior and stronger engagement.

Experts emphasize that a child’s environment plays a critical role in their ability to learn. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in five children experience a mental or behavioral health condition — highlighting the need for supportive and flexible learning spaces.

Staff at the center say creating a safe and comfortable environment is key. When children feel at ease, they are more likely to participate, explore and retain what they learn. That approach includes not only outdoor education, but also additional supports like a therapy dog named Annie.

Annie helps students transition between classrooms, eases separation from parents and supports social and emotional development — becoming an important part of the learning experience.

Educators said efforts like these reflect a broader shift in how schools operate today. From new teaching methods to evolving technology, classrooms look very different than they did even a decade ago and that means educators must continuously adjust.

The outdoor classroom project was made possible with support from PNC Bank and the Powder Mill Foundation.

School leaders hope the new space will not only enhance learning, but also create an environment where children feel safe, supported and excited to grow.
