HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – Hallmark Youthcare cut the ribbon on its new Parham Road clinic, opening an intensive outpatient program for kids ages 11 to 17.

“We’re officially open,” said Elyssia Stratton.

After meeting with schools, community groups and social services, organizers say they found a clear gap in care. In the group’s analysis of the community, they found many other organizations didn’t accept adolescents with substance abuse issues or Medicaid.

“There were children who were falling through the cracks,” Stratton said. “We’re willing to take — and able to take — those with dual diagnosis, behavioral health and substance abuse needs.”

The intensive outpatient program has a staff of two therapists and a psychologist. It gives parents a new option between a weekly therapy session and full residential treatment.

“Intensive outpatient is that middle ground to say we’ve exhausted those lower level outpatient options and the child is still struggling and we’re concerned for their safety, we’re concerned for their health, and we’re concerned for their mental health,” Stratton said.

The facility includes a group therapy room where kids and teens can gather to talk about their feelings and engage in interactive activities.

In addition, there are offices for therapists and the psychiatrist to hold individual meetings with patients.

There is also a community room where kids can draw, do their homework, lounge or play games. The facility has room to add when they’re ready.

“We’ve been talking about this for over two years, and we looked at several spaces. We wanted to make sure we had a space that was open, warm, lots of light, colorful,” Stratton said.

Organizers are already looking ahead with plans to expand their outpatient services next.

“It’s just really exciting to see there really was a need that was not being met and now we’re able to meet that need. So we’re looking forward to continue growing and adding more patients to our groups,” Stratton said.
