GRIDLEY, Calif. — Construction is steadily advancing on a new inpatient youth mental health facility in Gridley, as officials work to address what many describe as a growing crisis for families across California.

Crews on Tuesday reached a key milestone at the 9,200-square-foot site, lifting roof trusses into place as the structure begins to take shape behind Orchard Hospital.

“The project is rolling along. We’re flying trusses today, hopefully getting them sheeted next week so we can move into interior framing,” said construction superintendent Travis Smith.

The $9 million project, funded through a federal grant, will provide 16 inpatient beds for adolescents experiencing mental and behavioral health crises.

Health officials estimate that roughly 45% of California adolescents are struggling with mental health challenges, underscoring the demand for services.

Even before the facility opens, providers say interest is already high.

“Well, it’s a start,” said Kirsten Storne-Piazza, Director of Behavioral Health at Orchard Hospital in Gridley.

Storne-Piazza said she receives about two dozen calls each month from across the state asking about the facility’s progress, a reflection of the limited availability of youth mental health services.

“I think because there’s such a need for services,” she said.

The facility, located on Ford Avenue, is expected to serve patients in short-term stays of up to 30 days. Officials say it will focus on youth in acute crisis, including those who may be a danger to themselves or others or who are struggling to function in daily life.

When the facility officially opens, a waiting list is all but expected. Many inquiries come from families, friends and organizations seeking help for young people in need.

While 16 beds will not resolve California’s broader mental health challenges, officials say the project represents a critical step forward for a region with limited inpatient options.

For families awaiting care, the rising structure offers something tangible: the promise of access to treatment closer to home.

Officials say that the facility is expected to be completed by November.
