On Thursday morning, two elementary schools in Cottage Grove went into safety protocols for about two hours while police dealt with a man having a mental health crisis nearby.
Police responded just before 10 a.m. to the report of a 30-year-old armed man inside a home on the 8600 block of Ironwood Avenue.
A perimeter was established out of caution, and a CodeRED alert was sent to homes in the immediate area for people to shelter in place. Armstrong and Hillside elementary schools were both notified by police and went into safety protocols.
Other family members inside the home got out safely with the officers’ help.
The man was taken into custody without incident around noon.
