CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – Community Counseling Center will offer free training to help people respond to mental health and substance abuse challenges.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and CCC is bringing training sessions to five different southeast Missouri communities.

Two different types of courses are offered, educating participants on how to help youth and adults with different needs.

According to organizers, both courses teach the “ALGEE” action plan:

Approach, assess for risk of suicide or harm and assistListen nonjudgmentallyGive reassurance and informationEncourage appropriate professional helpEncourage self-help and other support strategies

The first course is from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 4 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. It will focus on Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA).

The second will be at the Bollinger County Health Department in Marble Hill. The course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 11, focusing on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).

That same week on Thursday, May 14, an MHFA course will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Ste. Genevieve County YMCA.

A YMHFA course will be offered at Black River Electric Cooperative in Fredericktown on Tuesday, May 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The final course will take place at the Perry County Joint Justice Center, covering MHFA. That’s from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27.

The training sessions are free, but people must register and complete pre-work before attending.
