GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Pirate Nation’s psychiatric care center is receiving funding for more mental health resources.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield NC Foundation has invested $1.5 million into East Carolina University’s Center for Telepsychiatry and e-Behavioral Health.

The foundation will also use its funds to support the North Carolina Statewide Telepsychiatric Program (NC-STeP) to offer on-campus mental health services to UNC Pembroke students.

A news release says that Elizabeth City State University students already have on-campus resources thanks to the foundation’s investment back in 2022.

“We are grateful for this new support from the Blue Cross NC Foundation to address the health care needs of college students,” said Philip Rogers, ECU chancellor. “This grant will allow us to build on the innovative work of NC-STeP in leveraging technology to provide care in the region and across the state.”

Officials say the long-term goal is to build integrated mental health care across UNC schools, with the statewide program to be implemented later this year.
