Behavioral Health Close to Home | Imperial County Behavioral Health Services

In rural southeastern California, Imperial County Behavioral Health Services is redefining what community-based behavioral healthcare can look like. Serving a predominantly Latino border region shaped by economic hardship, geographic barriers, and limited access to care, ICBHS has built a responsive system grounded in its “No Wrong Door” philosophy: meeting people where they are through integrated mental health, substance use and crisis services.

From regional clinics, school-based support and wellness centers to mobile crisis teams and the expansion of the county’s first adult residential substance use treatment facility, ICBHS is building a coordinated continuum of care rooted in access, equity, and recovery.

From an expanded crisis continuum of care system resulting in a 39 percent reduction in involuntary psychiatric holds to the launch of a new psychiatry residency program with the University of California, San Diego, aimed at strengthening the local workforce, ICBHS is creating a stronger behavioral health system close to home and demonstrates what community-centered care can make possible.
