BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – Local organizations partnered together on prescription drug take back day to keep misused or expired medications safe.

Drug overdose deaths are decreasing for the first time since 2018 according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, but prescription drug misuse remains a public health crisis in the United States.

Hospital Corporation of America Florida Blake Hospital and Sarasota Doctors North Emergency partnered with the Bradenton Police Department and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office during the event.

A combined 168 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in by local residents at two separate sites.

The event helps raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and the importance of safe and proper disposal of unused or expired medications.
