Nearly five years after killing her husband, Nakeyia Anderson was back in court Friday to be sentenced for threatening her landlord with a gun.
Instead, her lawyer Marc Laterzo got her diverted in a plea deal to a mental health court – called therapeutic intervention court. If she completes it in the next 12-18 months, her new case would be dismissed.
The deal was another chance for Anderson.
Without it, she faced a double-whammy – going to prison for the new case, plus additional prison time for violating probation for her husband’s death.
Judge Salvador Vasquez said he thought she violated her probation, but accepted the lawyers’ deal.
Gary Police responded on May 8, 2025, to the 4100 block of W. 22nd Plaza. The landlord said Anderson came outside the home screaming about her security deposit. He said her mother paid for it. Anderson went inside and got a gun. She was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and two counts of intimidation.
The case was led by Deputy Prosecutor Keith Anderson, no relation.
She was sentenced in February 2024 to two years in prison and one on probation after a jury convicted her of reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, in the July 18, 2021, fatal shooting of Tihomas Anderson, 44.
