Transforming Behavioral Health Workforce Development with the Nebraska Model – BHECN

The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) was established in 2009 in response to a statewide behavioral health workforce crisis. Sparked by urgent need and legislative action, BHECN set out to strengthen Nebraska’s behavioral health system by growing and supporting its workforce. The result: The Nebraska Model—a nationally referenced, six-part strategy for developing behavioral health professionals through career awareness, preparation, training, professional experience, research, and outreach. Today, BHECN brings this model to life across six regional sites, shaping the future of mental health care in Nebraska and beyond.
