FOND DU LAC (WLUK) — A mental health crisis situation in Fond du Lac was peacefully resolved Friday, thanks to police officers and a social worker.
Around 2:10 p.m., the Fond du Lac Police Department responded to the Motel 6 located at 649 W. Johnson Street for a report of a 59-year-old Fond du Lac man in crisis. He stated he was armed with a handgun.
Officers quickly established containment, secured the area and coordinated resources to manage the situation and ensure the safety of hotel guests and staff. As a precaution, Sabish Middle School, which is near the motel, was temporarily placed in a secure hold.
FDLPD’s community response social worker established communication with the man via phone and remained in contact with him for nearly an hour.
“Through patience, compassion, communication and de-escalation efforts, the community response social worker was able to convince the male to peacefully exit the room unarmed. The individual was safely taken into protective custody without incident,” a news release states.
He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and care, police said.
