KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer shot an armed 32-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis early Tuesday morning, law enforcement stated.

The shooting happened at 1:20 a.m. at the 3400 block of Bell Crossing Drive.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said KCK police officers first responded to a call at 10:33 p.m. regarding an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

Officers arrived at the scene and encountered a man on the roof of a residence armed with a knife. They were able to de-escalate the situation, and the man let go of the weapon and then got off the roof.

KBI said KCKPD initially cleared the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m., and 10 minutes later, another call was made about the same man being armed again.

A third call was made at 1:15 a.m., saying the man had broken into the basement.

KCKPD officers arrived again at 1:20 a.m. for the man on the roof, armed with multiple knives. The man made throwing motions at officers and family members, leading to one KCKPD officer shooting the man once.

The individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital. KCKPD said no officers were injured.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate.
