SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – June is Men’s Mental Health Month and one local barbershop effort is bringing mental health conversations to a familiar place for Black men — the barbershop.

Community organizer Derrick L. Henderson and African-centered psychologist and author Dr. Mwata Sankara, also known as Dr. Kevin Washington, are teaming up with Bos-Man Barber College owner Shawn Boston for a roundtable and focus group on Black men’s mental health and wellness. They’re inviting local barbers to talk about how the shop can serve as a trusted space and as early support when someone is struggling.

The “Deep Fade” project aims to train barbers in mental health literacy and connect them with community resources.

“Man, you don’t know nothing I write about. Nothing I do comes from a Eurocentric perspective, right? This right here is an example. Going to the black barbershop, the community, doing the work, is not a Eurocentric perspective,” Sankara said.

The event was open to all barbers.
