ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Nearly 300 children from across Atlanta participated in a soccer event Tuesday that combined World Cup excitement with mental health education.
The program, organized by Laureus USA and Movember, introduced children to soccer while teaching skills like resilience and problem-solving. Organizers said the activities also demonstrated how physical activity can improve mental health.
The event brought World Cup energy to kids who may not otherwise attend the festivities, according to organizers. Participants engaged in soccer-based activities designed to provide practical tools they can use beyond the field.
“Never stop imagining and dreaming the possibility that you can be whatever. Sports allows us to do that today,” said Terry Johnson, executive director of Field of Dreams Academy.
Rachelle Patel, senior director of external affairs at Laureus USA, said the program aimed to make soccer accessible in local communities.
“We might not be able to bring every young person into the stadium for a game, but we can bring that experience and joy of soccer right here to them in their community,” Patel said.
The event took place at Ben Hill Recreation Center in southwest Atlanta.
