As part of the University of South Carolina Upstate’s ongoing commitment to campus safety, the USC Upstate Department of Public Safety has announced the launch of Spartan Safe, a free mobile app that turns any smartphone into a personal safety device. By downloading this free safety app, students and the Spartan community can enhance their personal safety both on and off campus.

The app, powered by the nationally recognized Rave AppArmor Mobile platform, is available immediately for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

With a single tap, users can contact the USC Upstate Department of Public Safety, reach 911 dispatchers or access a curated library of mental health and wellness resources.

“The safety of our community is our highest priority,” said Eric Boyce, chief of police. “Spartan Safe puts emergency help and mental health support in the palm of every student’s hand. We encourage every member of our campus community to download the app and familiarize themselves with its features before they ever need them.”

Key features of the Spartan Safe app include:

Direct connection to USC Upstate Public Safety and 911 emergency dispatch

One-tap access to mental health and counseling resources

Campus safety tips, emergency procedures and resource guides

Real-time safety alerts and notifications from the university

Mobile Blue Light and safety check-in features

Anonymous tip reporting

By integrating mental health resources alongside emergency tools, Spartan Safe reflects the university’s recognition that safety encompasses both physical security and emotional wellness.

“We are proud to provide this important resource for our students,” said Chancellor Bennie Harris. “This app bridges the gap between emergency response and mental health support in a way that is immediate, accessible and stigma-free.”

The Rave AppArmor Mobile platform powers campus safety apps at more than 1,000 institutions across North America, providing a trusted, reliable infrastructure built specifically for higher education communities.
