Who woulda thought that you could learn about Behavioral Activation from Mr. Beast? Well it’s true. One of the interesting things about our brains is that they adapt to the situation that we’re in. So when Mr. Beast got into a coffin and couldn’t move much, couldn’t do much, his decrease in activity levels led to a decrease in energy levels and mood. There is a feedback loop between our activity levels and our energy levels, and so one of the most effective treatments for depression is Behavioral Activation- making yourself do stuff, even if you don’t feel like it.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life’s direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

Damn I’ve been feeding my depression so well 😂
Just like the first Law of Physics
How are you a therapist and supporr betterhelp??? Do your research.
Damn, then i have depression and had no clue
That's what i feel most days without being stuck in physical boundaries
I love how relatable and informative you made it to be while also keeping it concise and without any wow-factor
Therapy in a nutshell, truly
good, i always wanted to be more skilled at having depression. haven't watched the video yet
So true. Thank you for teaching!
Many times when I take action to try to overcome my depression I actually end up feeling angry. Why is that?
There is an important caveat. If you fail at activating yourself, which is especially likely if you have a comorbitity like anxiety or ADHD, this failure itself becomes food for the depression. Your attempt to activate yourself must come with an acceptance of likely failure. What you are attempting to do is hard, and failure is expected. Your win condition is trying and failing. Trying and succeeding is an extra big win. And if you feel like big steps are too big, make small steps.
what if I manage to push myself for a while (days, in my case, like no more than 2 weeks) without anything really changing and then you feel like the most absolute piece of trash and just want the End? This happens everytime I try to take action, it backfires spectaculary.
I just want to be allowed to walk my dog and not have to have people tell me the way I exercise is wrong. Hey, man, my dog got me off the couch, that's something. I don't want to jog, run, or go to the gym… ugggh
Idle hands are the devils playground. Keep yourself busy even if you don’t feel like it and you would be able to push out of it
Maybe that’s true for a majority but not true for all.
Although I appreciate the spanish dub, it only makes the video experience worse because of the ai voice, by using it you cut every kind of emotion and inflections your voice has, and thats always something important to take in account
Just a quick note, i know getting an actual dubbing team its more complicated, but its worth it in the long run
I'm at the point where I know I need to take action, I'm realizing I'm denying myself basic things like sunlight and enough minerals. I know I may be in a functional freeze state. I don't really do anything or socialize, just at work because I have to here and there. I am crying here and there out of nowhere, just feeling hit with depression. It's so hard to take action, set that inertia in motion to start, but I know it has great rewards, I've done it before. It's never going to feel pleasant or comfortable to start.
I agree with this. I get into these situations, getting stuck, no movement, inertia, I need momentum then, be a doer, do things
Overcome depression with action.
Makes sense. Note to self.
Oh wow, through this video I came to a realization.
So normally I’m quite a busy guy with friends, sports and hobbies but at the moment I’m recovering from surgery.
I’ve been told to have six weeks of rest, with no bending down and lifting objects heavier than 1 1/5 kg.
The first three weeks were easy because I was tired and thus slept a lot. But now I’m more active, at least out of bed and more hours awake I have the same dreary feeling like you are describing.
I’m locked in for a reason and I know it helps me in the long run to stay as easy as possible to give my body 100% the ability to heal.
But I just don’t feel like to do anything. And it’s quite contradictory because on the other hand I want to escape this situation and want to work on my physical condition again.
i've seen his video, but it's – sadly – such a great example of depression
Well said 👏
Tate was correct all along!
so, Tate was right 😂😂
Helpful video. Thank you ! 🙏
Maintaining a clean/organized environment greatly reduces the risk of getting “stuck”.
Clutter=distraction and will interrupt your flow of movement every time.
Very useful information, I will keep it in mind if I ever come across depression of my own, or from someone I'm close to! Thank you
Yes
Depression isnt real
I think I saw it on Tiktok; someone’s mom told them that if they feel sad, they should start cleaning anything in the house. It’s an action that seems unrelated to the thing that is bothering them, but I think it works because it gets the body moving, and there is a sense of accomplishment afterwards from seeing a dirty object getting cleaned by your own hands. I just remembered that when I saw your video.
Really interesting oberservation
🏃♀
Really makes sense. I am always busy doing something so I never feel depressed. Sitting idly doing nothing is almost impossible for me
Fun fact, a recent meta-analysis showed that dancing, with or without exercise, had by far the largest positive effect on depressed individuals compared to other activities.
I get out of bed cause I want coffee.
to me, depression can indeed momentarily be lifted by doing smt. What makes depression terrible for me is that you sink back into it after doing smt, requiring you to constantly force yourself to do things you enjoy to avoid staying depressed and inactive for too long. It's a never ending battle that you'll lose eventually.
Basically depression isnt real
Force yourself
I started skating boarding from a random tiny birt of interest a few weeks ago and it changed my perspective of life a bit. Sometimes we forget how dymanic the world is when we are used to seeing the same box (home/office) every day
first time watching a video with an audio produced by AI and im very surprised, its pretty good already! (from english to portuguese)
I think by not eating a bad diet of processed foods is what makes depression go away…
But people think it’s a change of scenery…or doing something different..
Well no it’s your diet..sorry to tell you this…
great video. You really captured a great way to understand this whole thang, and just to back up what you mentioned about exercise, i used to be tired and depreSsive, then one day I started joggingevery am . I never stopped ans have doing it for ten years non stop , every morning I never skip a day because of the effect that has in mi mind and body…and life.

Understanding how our activity levels impact mood and energy is key to managing depression effectively. I just watched this video and it's eye-opening! Who would have thought Mr. Beast's coffin challenge could teach us about Behavioral Activation?
Love it! Thank you!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I got Mr Beast and Mr Hands confused. 😂
