Mental Health Careers: More Than Just Psychologists

I’ve had this issue recently where I have difficulty describing what I do with one label. What am I? And what do other people know? Does everyone understand the difference between a therapist and a psychologist? How about a social worker and a life coach? In this video, I try to break down a few common job titles that you might hear in psychology and the mental health field in order to explain their differences (and similarities, in some cases).

  1. All of the information regarding salaries was taken from glassdoor.com. I'm not sure how accurately the numbers reflect individuals who identify with particular titles. For simplicity, I stuck to the basic job title and did not include variants (e.g. I searched "social worker" but didn't search "licensed clinical social worker"). So job titles like "clinician" show up as lower income because, even though it includes doctors or RNs, no company lists those positions as just "clinician". Anyway, just something to bear in mind as you're watching!

  2. Hey! Great video. I'm from Argentina and it's true that psychoanalysis is popular here. Particularly, I'm on a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalytic therapy (I've been diagnosed with OCD pure O) and it's working very good on me. I'm so happy I started it!

  3. Great job on this one; I often get this question from my clients! The Marriage and Family Therapists might be a little upset about being left out, though 😉

  4. Cool video. You should do a follow-up sometime that covers some of the more applied/ non-clinical titles (eg. Experimental psychologist, human factors psychologist, I/O psychologist, cognitive scientist, neuroscientist, neurologist, neurobiologist).

  5. I love how you don’t just talk at the camera. You obviously write a script and plan your shots ahead, but it doesn’t feel so formal. The way you shoot everything is dynamic and conversational as well as informative. Subscribed.

  6. Thank you very much for aaaaaaall the videos, I had a lot of prejudices (and dogmas provided by the family) about the sciences around the brain, but thanks to a lot of people like you now I'm very fascinated. I don't know what career to choose FIRST, but I'll choose a mental health career at some point of my life.🌺 Love you all!

  7. Changing the scenes in tandem with altering your labels was very effective, for both spacial recall and categorical memorization. Do you have any training with somatic experiencing?

Also, thank you very much for your contextual comment about using the label "shrink", gave me a solid laugh!

  8. What about an Analyst? Short for Jungian Analyst. Not sure how you left that one out. Especially considering they are probably more prevalent then Psychoanalysts in the US.

  9. I don’t want to comment because you may psychoanalyze me. 😆

Serious note, thank you for making this video. I’m searching my career now. It was helpful.

  10. Love this video! the informal "chat" like presentation. Though I am still trying to figure out what your "official" title is….I was hoping you would have told us at the end. I plan on showing this video to my high school students for an introductory overview on Mental Health Careers. Thanks for the awesome video. Love the cats, too.
