Loneliness is causing our physical and mental health to suffer | DW News

Everyone is lonely at times. But chronic loneliness can make you sick. Earlier this month, US surgeon general shone a light on the problems associated with loneliness by declaring it an American epidemic. He said the growing isolation in society poses a health risk as deadly as smoking. In an 80-page report Doctor Vivek Murthy said: “We now know that loneliness is a common feeling that many people experience. It’s like hunger or thirst. ItLoneliness as dangerous as smokings a feeling the body sends us when something we need for survival is missing.”

  1. as someone who's beeon on social media since 2008, i think its done far more damage then good- look at a timeline of what has gone on- people started doing online dating in the mid to late 2000's, mainly around 2008-2012, im not sure how the stats stack up today in 2024, but im sure that didn't help, im sure video gaming online did some damage too, i think its a combo of many things all digital or tech. driven that caused alot of these issues to grow- im sure consumerism has driven it too , etc. etc. anything that can drive people into isolation or distrusting people is just going to jack it up more, it causes alot of mental health issues-

  2. The problem is not rooted in masculinity. It's rooted in femininity (For men). IMHO this woman and many like her are a big part of the problem. Masculinity is cheered on in women by the powers that run the world to weaken and feminize ,men so they are less of a challenge to authority and this woman seems to have absolutely no problem with that. In fact, she seems absolutely giddy about it.

  3. In my opinion the labelling done with the terms masculinity and femininity could be even more damaging since it does suggest that masculinity is connected to hard social skills only and also that femininity is connected to soft social skills predominantly.
Have you seen a man playing with his children?
Have you seen women create intrigues among themselves at their workplace?
I guess that due to differences in socialisation hard and soft skills just look a bit different and operate on different aspects of social interactions for women and men.

  4. Wrong!!!!! Loneliness is a symptom of a cause!! We should all be asking what is that cause? We live in a culture that only treats symptoms and couldn't care less about why the symptom is there in the first place! Here's just one example: Trauma. Trauma often causes one to feel the need to isolate. What you do with that isolation matters! It can be extremely unhealthy if you continue isolating and ignore personal growth. Focus on personal growth and people isolation dissolves. You are worth so much, even when you are isolated, but you need to find out why and this starts with establishing healthy disciplines. Hold yourself accountable and take small steps to improve.

The real question is, why has trauma become part of so many peoples lives? Why are the monsters staying hidden and not being held accountable? This is a systematic issue in my opinion and no one is willing to change or bring this to the light. Self-centered, power-seeking, "extroverts" trample on their targets to get leverage in life….guess who is going to be the one that isolates? The one that steps on his neighbor is rewarded with social popularity, promotions, and praises of confidence. This IS WRONG and it isn't rocket science. Looks like DW News is raising this alarm and I believe they already know the cause and solution but apparently it's too big to even consider.

Let's talk about men now, men are increasingly finding peace and happiness in isolation. This is because women are praised, and even worshipped, for tearing their "partner's" reputation apart for whatever personal gain you can imagine. Men don't need this in their life, and cutting out these monsters is the most healthy choice you can make. I'm 37 years old, I spent my 20's meeting 100's of women and having relationships with many. I have divorced twice now and have yet to find a women who's ego doesn't completely shred every mutual benefit you can experience in a relationship because it requires them to change. They have been told by all these babybooming karen's and their fearful weak father's to find happiness and anyone who doesn't give that to you is the enemy. Well, if my wife keeps punching me in the face because I disagree with extremely selfish and destructive behavior to our relationship, I'm not making very happy now am I? You wouldn't believe the red carpet these witches get in court too when you finally make the responsible decision to leave. Selfishness and betrayal in relationships cause wounds to their victims. These wounds need to heal and isolating to find peace and re-establish disciplines is the best way to hear. Therapists continue to side with narcissists and leave the victim helpless and hopeless…..then they tell them they shouldn't isolate :'D :'D :'D

  5. Ridiculous. I love my solitude. People get on my nerves, or they just bore me to tears. I refuse to buy into the garbage that being alone is a health hazard. Just another way of trying to force conformity on people.

  6. Something happened in my life some years ago … and it was the moment where my life fell apart. I had no extraordinary life , just the normal things that give everyone a feeling to be alive .. like surroundings and love . And then a woman came in my life. I deeply loved her and she even sold her house to come in mine . And then , a nightmare slowly happened. I realized I was in a relationship with a double faced manipulative woman. She slowly isolated me from my friends and changed the way they see me , every time she suddenly humiliated me in front of them in the most disrespectful way and returning the situation when i reacted . She went cold and disappeared and suddenly reappeared many times . She give me false hopes of building a family and I believed her naively. … the last time she disappeared, a month later I saw her on social media at Christmas Day on a ski trip with a new guy and I just fall apart…since I never find happiness again, and my social circle because they disappeared at the same time as her . Every thing about it is beyond my comprehension and I’m isolated from everyone .. I just go to work and I feel my life is passing by and I have no hope for the future . She had kids with this guy and I stayed at the same place and everything of who I was before her has gone.
