More therapists won’t fix the mental health care crisis. Here’s what can.
For every 1 mental health therapist in the U.S., there are 350 people in need of support — but simply increasing the number of clinical therapists won’t fix the growing crisis. Dr. Trina Clayeux introduces her transformative, community-based approach which could close the gap.

Dr. Trina Clayeux, CEO of Give an Hour, has a transformative idea to address the critical mental health crisis in America. The system we have in place is overwhelmed by demand, but simply adding more therapists isn’t a sufficient solution to support the 1 in 5 Americans who will experience a mental health episode each year.
Dr. Clayeux recognizes the limits of clinical care alone to serve the unique needs of individuals seeking mental health support. This led her to launch a revolutionary community-based mental health care approach that has already created a network of more than 4,000 mental health ambassadors—trained individuals capable of recognizing emotional distress and providing crisis support—providing voluntary care to nearly 3 million people.
These wellness ambassadors, working directly with people in their communities, demonstrate effectiveness on par with clinical care. Such community-centric models have proven particularly impactful in tightly-knit groups with scarce mental health resources, like the military. Dr. Clayeux is leading a movement towards leveraging community strength and personal connections in mental health care, showcasing a path where everyone—not just clinically trained therapists—is part of the solution.

That's why in Positive Psychology, we say, "Other people matter." It's the belief that people thrive when they connect with others, making social connections and emotional intelligence essential for well-being.
Here's a crazy thought. Why not start at the grassroots level and empower everyone with these skills?
As more people embrace them, we'll see a positive shift towards "critical mass well-being."
As Artificial Intelligence evolves and potentially takes on more thinking tasks, we've got an exciting opportunity to rethink education—public, private, homeschool, microschool…however you educate your next generation! What if we focused on nurturing empathy, compassion, and social intelligence in a world where AI handles many brainy tasks?
We'd create a well-rounded system that beautifully combines technology with human emotional growth—
Possible?
You may say I'm a dreamer…well…
There is no point to waste any effort in going to therapy if the main job of the therapist is to keep you coming back.
😃🙌🌈 The Power of Friendship
It's takes a village…to heal, to connect, to love one another. This is such a powerful model. Beautiful documentary about an effective solution to the mental health crisis!
One the problems is the American diet and lifestyle. Its so bad to our health that it takes a big toll on our mental health too

Lutherans have a phrase: Mutual consolation of the brethren. It has to do with the forgiveness of sins in our context. However, it is important to try to support people in their suffering with presence and time. Words are not the best things, in my view. Not right away. Presence and time with your support structure is better than being alone. COVID-19 was a thing that totally ruined the natural inclination to seek friends and support. We need to get out of the cave even though it is never ideal, but it's what's there and available for you. Don't trust the shadows behind you. They aren't what really is. It's just that those needing the shadows first to be perfectly ready never are ready to leave their caves. If the shadows are in front of you, do you have your head screwed on backwards normally?
