‘Inmates’ Defy Stigma by Seeking Mental Health Care in Nigeria

Most Nigerians who suffer mental health problems never seek or are offered help. As doctors work to convince the public mental health problems can and should be treated, patients at one facility in northern Nigeria say they are among the lucky ones. VOA’s Heather Murdock reports.

  1. A number of 'rehab' facilities like this have been raided by the police in Nigeria; not only shackling but beating and other cruelties are common. You will notice that the 'work' is obviously pretend; people banging pots, trying to drive a nail in by hitting the sharp end, and 'reading' but nobody turning a page. It is sad to see an organisation that is supposedly a serious news organisation get taken in by this. (Though there are similarly abusive 'rehab' programmes for young people in the US.)
