‘Waiting for the Call’ A Workshop for Heroes and Hospitality KSNV
For nearly 20 years, Jeff Dill has been keeping an eye on the mental wellbeing of firefighters, starting with his colleagues’ deployment to New Orleans for the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
“They were showing me videos of bodies in the street; they were struggling. You have to understand that in 2005 this was a time in the fire service we never talked about behavioral health. That was taboo and so I decided what can I do to help my brothers and sisters, and I went back, got my master’s degree and became a counselor,” he recalled.
Dill founded the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance which has expanded over the years. It’s a mission with a tragic task: tracking firefighter suicides and recently, studied what role moral injury plays.
