How glucose affects mental health
Complete transcript:
The Holistic Psychologist: What if your mental health issues, aren’t a brain problem, but a metabolism problem. Studies show that conditions like depression, anxiety, and even bipolar are linked to how your brain processes energy, especially glucose. Your brain is the most energy-hungry organ in your body. And if it’s not getting fueled properly, things start to break down. For example research shows that people who have depression, often have low glucose metabolism in key areas of their brain.
This means that their brain isn’t efficiently able to turn fuel into energy, leading to fatigue, brain fog, and mood instability. It’s not just depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have been linked to insulin resistance. Meaning that their body struggles to regulate blood sugar, which directly affects brain function so instead of looking at mental illness as a chemical imbalance, we need to be asking how is the brain getting its energy? Is blood sugar stable or is it constantly spiking and crashing? Is insulin resistance playing a role? Because when you fix your metabolic health, you don’t just change your physical health you change your mental health too.

Wow absolute vital information. Every doctor should check their patients glucose levels before prescribing antidepressants or mental institutions.
Fascinating
@TheHolisticPsychologist Has there been any research to indicate that this also applies to ADHD?
This is so true, annoyingly. I stopped eating added sugar (still eat fruit etc.) a month ago and I sleep much better and haven’t had a headache. I‘m so mad about it because I LOVE sweets. But I will continue to do this.
I highly recommend Dr. Neal Barnard's book, Program for Reversing Diabetes. It's the only clinically proven method of preventing and reversing type 2 diabetes (and thereby insulin resistance) as opposed to just managing it which makes it worse over the long haul.
100%! After years of prescribed chemical poisoning, my current medical team is treating my mental health issues with diet. Rebuilding my gut biome, as we speak.
Thank you for sharing! God bless you for your commitment to help us out here, united in our challenges and struggles. Best wishes brothers and sisters out here in cyberspace! 🫶💓💪💘🐈💝💖🙏🐕👍🦁💞❤️🩹🌺❤️🔥🌸😻💕🌞🌼💐🌷🌻💋🥰🧸🐈⬛❤️🙂🙃
Seems quite obvious in hindsight
Thank you ma'am ❤❤
Is there a blood test or any other to determine how the brain is processing glucose? Thank you.
Nah nah. This is not the chicken or the egg. Trauma etc. takes op excessive energy. So you gotta flip it: the glucose levels are a result of thestressors.
What is the source of scientific research for this statement?
Stress seeks comfort, fear seeks safety. Thats why we develope addictions. Some people have a sweet tooth, people are different in what they search for as coping.
Sugar and high fructose is available EVERYWHERE, its even in meat etc.
Go take a hike when saying that bipolar, depression and more disorders are because of this glucose level.
I get fueled just fine, and have had severe complex PTSD for over two decades.
Take. A. Hike.
Okay . . . but how? Genuinely asking. Cuz the advice out there is all over the place and at times completely contradictory. Sounds like a good hypothesis but one still lacking actionable experimental evidence.
I’m sure this is the case for epilepsy too
Creatine! And Bacillus coagulans for a month
Mind blowing 🤯
I’m diabetic and this is so true
Sooo important! Thank you very much for talking about this – tho once in Insulin Resistance etc can be challenging to change habits etc ~ tho there are good ways like Intermittent Fasting & other hacks for Vegus Nerve, breath work, humming (yes, really!) , hot -cold saunas/cold showers etc Dr Pradip Jamnadas videos
Is it causal tho? I know there are many people who don't have physical health or insulin resistance issues but do have depression and other mental-health issues, so it can't be the only issue causing mental health issues.
You can't treat it with just a diet imo, but diet, exercising, social life can be a great preventative measure.
Ketosis is the answer!
That was me. Dietary changes healed so much in my body.
How do I fix it?
SO MANY PEOPLE are giving themselves lifelong brain damage from psychotropic medications. My MIL has Parkinson's from years of bipolar medication. Yet, come to find out, she was really just gluten intolerant…. Unfortunately, the damage is already done. Also, many psychiatric conditions are caused by histamine intolerance. Western medicine has a real problem with ignoring the cause of an illness. They just label it and prescribe a pill. It's insanity.
This became extra apparent when post viral damage from Covid damaged my body’s ability to process sugar effectively.
Blood sugar being out of whack is literally a "chemical imbalance"
Getting rid of processed sugar is a game changer. Sugar is a toxic DRUG.
I think you’re on to something!
Finally the truth is coming out!!!
This is one of the most profound things I’ve learned about my well being in many years. Thank you! Can’t wait to look into this angle of my health.
