‘We’re still here for you’: Healthcare providers say resources are available as 988 hotline prepares

Since 2022, callers to the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline have had the option to press three for a connection to LGBTQ+ youth services. But that connection will soon be severed, as the program braces for the Trump administration’s 2026 budget proposal to cut funding for 988’s LGBTQ+ youth and young adult services.

“The concern here truly is, losing this access will have a lethal impact,” said Casey Pick, the law and policy director at the Trevor Project, a national nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention of LGBTQ+ youth.

Pick says the “press three option” is saving lives, since LGBTQ+ children are four times more likely to attempt or complete suicide.

“We have served 1.3 million contacts,” said Pick.

The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said the move is an effort to focus on all help seekers.

  1. Not true. This line can be used by the state government to abduct your children in Washington state. If your kid calls and tells them you dont support LGBTQ. They come to your house and trick your kid into coming out to their van. They take your kid and then tell you after they abducted them. There is nothing you can do. Its insane.
