Every day, countless students across India battle immense academic and career pressure, often in silence. This puts a spotlight on the urgent need for robust mental health support systems and highlights glaring gaps in our public safety infrastructure.

The tragic incident involving a bright Delhi University student, an “overachiever” juggling multiple degrees and an internship, has brought these issues to the forefront. A note found in their room conveyed feelings of being a “failure and a burden,” reflecting a struggle many students face. The last known location of their phone was Delhi’s Signature Bridge, and their body was later recovered from the Yamuna River on July 13.

This unfortunate case has undeniably exposed systemic shortcomings and raised critical questions about student well-being. Alarmingly, over 60 CCTV cameras on the Signature Bridge were non-functional, despite its known sensitive nature for such incidents. Why were these crucial cameras not operational?

Today’s students grapple with immense pressure related to their studies and careers, leading to a rise in mental health challenges. Yet, a pervasive societal stigma often labels seeking help as a sign of weakness, preventing many from reaching out. This tragic event serves as a profound wake-up call for our system, the government, and all parents to prioritize mental health, ensure public safety, and foster an environment where students feel supported and heard.
