Neuroscientist Explains: Can Psychedelics Really Treat Depression?
What if the key to healing depression isn’t another pill but a profound shift in consciousness? On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, Dr. Mark Hyman talks with Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, one of the world’s leading psychedelic researchers and neuroscientists, about how compounds like psilocybin to unlock plasticity in the brain and offer new hope for people with treatment-resistant mental health challenges.
Dr. Carhart-Harris, a pioneer in using brain imaging to understand how psychedelics work, explains his “entropic brain principle”—a theory describing how these substances create a “system reset” by breaking down rigid, negative thought patterns that are the hallmark of conditions like depression, PTSD, and addiction. This isn’t just about a “trip”; it’s a profound biological recalibration that enhances brain plasticity, allowing for deep, therapeutic breakthroughs.
This conversation offers a balanced, scientific look at the immense promise of psychedelic medicine and the critical importance of safety, set, and setting. Discover why traditional antidepressants (SSRIs) often fall short and how psychedelic-assisted therapy may offer a more holistic and effective path to healing by getting to the root of suffering.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
What happens in the brain during a psychedelic experience and why it matters.
How the right set, setting, and support can shape the outcome of your healing journey.
Why some people improve after just one session, while others need a longer path.
The risks of self-medicating and how to explore psychedelics safely.
The Entropic Brain: Dr. Carhart-Harris’s revolutionary theory on consciousness.
Why plasticity is key to overcoming mental illness by helping people get “unstuck” from reinforced patterns.
The crucial role of psychological insight and emotional release in the healing process.
5-MeO-DMT: Research on the “God Molecule” and the quest to understand its effects on the brain.
How emerging tools, including AI, could help personalize treatment and improve recovery.

So how do you get this therapy? Insurance won't pay for it and it's not going to cost a few bucks for mescaline like in the 70s. So many things are capable but they're not actually offered to the general public…the regular "blue collar" working people who take the insurance they're offered and can't afford anything it doesn't cover.
