Ever feel like your thoughts are tricking you? The ABC model from cognitive behavioral therapy gives us a unique way to question our assumptions.
In the ABC Model:
A is the Activating Event: The event that happened.
B is the Belief: Your thoughts about what happened.
C is the Consequence: How you feel and act.
For Example:
You text a friend, they don’t reply. You think, “They’re mad at me” that’s your Belief or assumption, the (B), which makes you anxious , the Consequence, (C).
But what if you questioned that belief or assumption? Maybe they’re just busy or didn’t see your message, that might make you feel better and less anxious.
Next time you’re upset, Pause and identify the event (A), recognize your belief (B), and ask, “Is there another way to see this?”
By questioning our assumptions, we can break the cycle of negative thinking and improve our emotional health.
