What is it like to be a Healthcare Support Worker within Mental Health Services at MPFT
i’ve been with the trust for 19 years in lots of different roles and every day is different when you work in a community setting being able to see the direct impact of my work is so rewarding seeing someone i’m supporting regain their independence and enjoyment from life is probably the best part of being a health care support worker in the community i work in a multi-disciplinary team surrounded by other people who are also passionate about providing the best care possible which means i have lots of support around me and the opportunity to learn from other professionals being a healthcare support worker in an inpatient setting is incredibly rewarding i play a key role in the patient’s journey to recovery and my work directly impacts a person’s experience during their time in hospital i love being able to help people and i thrive off being able to positively impact someone’s life both clinically and by being a friendly face in their time of need being in a role that allows you to support people and facilitate their recovery is really powerful which is what’s really hard to come by in a job when joining mpft as a healthcare support worker you’ll get plenty of on-the-job experience and you’ll be surrounded by experts that you can learn from throughout your career you’ll learn physical health skills such as phlebotomy taking ecgs and lots more and you’ll have the opportunity to study for an mvq the trust has a really supportive culture and we’re championed to shape our careers and reach our goals whatever they may be although being a healthcare support worker is a fantastic role there are plenty of opportunities to progress there’s opportunities to become a trainee nursing associate or an assistant practitioner we work alongside our staff to make sure that we can give them everything they need to help them flourish the key to making a difference as a healthcare support worker is building and developing a relationship with those that you are supporting as a healthcare support worker we are given the luxury of time and we can really get to know the people we are working with more so perhaps than other healthcare professionals have the chance to it is by developing a meaningful relationship that we are able to build rapport and over time become a consistent friendly face in someone’s time of need we help to build confidence and work to enable the people we support to become more independent we also take some of the pressure off the team by being able to help out by attending joint appointments and delivering medication want to know more email us at mental health careers at mpft dot nhs dot uk
