Experiential Therapy at Rogers Behavioral Health
[Music] I’m Whitney and I’m an experiential therapist here at Rogers my role in treatment as an experiential therapist is to provide an opportunity for patients to practice new skills that they’re learning within their treatment through natural exposures and experiences where they can learn more about themselves learn more about um how they can apply the skills that they’re learning through Outdoor Adventure through ropes course through the kaying and the water sports and things that they may not even um have been expecting come up within those experiences for people who are concerned that this is just summer camp it’s more than that uh it can be both fun and challenging during these experiences um it’s an opportunity for people to really trust themselves and learn to trust others around them an opportunity for them to learn new things and grow the skills that they’re gaining in the other aspects of their treatment some examples that I’ve seen are uh residents coming in when they’re really scared or deathly afraid of water from past experiences and allowing me the opportunity to gain rapport with them build trust with me so they get to the point where they’re in a canoe paddling uh laughing and smiling and saying they never thought they would be able to have that opportunity a lot of times people are unexpectedly making breakthroughs through the uh opportunities that experiential therapy can give them there you go you got it any opportunity to just get outside their comfort zone and we have a lot of options for that through the ropes course through honestly through fishing even something like mundane like that uh a lot of natural exposure within fishing um some people just the contamination with worms or dirt or the fish or even just that not knowing how to do something not knowing a skill and the fear that comes with asking for help or even the patients that they have to have with themsel in learning a skill and we can tie that all back to their recovery [Music]
Experiential Therapy at Rogers is more than a walk in a park: it’s an opportunity to gain confidence, step outside of your comfort zone, and understand the importance of a support system. Patients at Rogers Behavioral Health residential care in Oconomowoc participate in experiential therapy in a multitude of ways, they can rock climb, go kayaking, learn to fish, and explore the large campus’ many hiking and biking trails, all with the guidance and support of trained experiential therapists. These exposures demonstrate, among other things, the importance of trusting in yourself and others, which translates into greater confidence in life after treatment.
