How to Maintain Your Progress After Therapy (Mental Health Treatment)

in this video i’m going to give you three tips on how to maintain your progress after treatment and we’re starting right now this is your first time here my name is dr harry mccleary and i’m a licensed clinical psychologist and navy veteran and my channel was dedicated to educating veterans service members and their families about mental health so if that’s you be sure to subscribe so let’s jump in my first tip for you is to continue monitoring your symptoms continue monitoring how you’re actually doing an easy trap to fall into after you’ve done some good mental health treatment and are feeling better is okay well i’m feeling better well i don’t have to do anything anymore and you’re just walking through life and you’re not really paying attention to how you’re doing and slowly yes surely you end up being in a place that you don’t want to be that’s why you have to monitor yourself on a regular basis so when you do feel like you’re not doing so well you can actually do something about it which goes into my next tip my second tip for you is that you have to continue to utilize the skills that you learned during treatment the skills that got you to where you are now the skills that got you to start to do better to feel better to change your behaviors this is incredibly important but also another trap that is incredibly easy to fall into if you’re getting value from this content then go ahead and click that like button so youtube will show this video to another veteran you’re finished treatment you’re doing well and you say to yourself i sure am glad therapy is over because that sucked i can finally stop doing all those skills and get back to doing what i used to do wrong you have to continue to do the things that got you there you have to continue to utilize the skills whether that’s thought challenging whether it’s taking care of yourself on a regular basis the key to sustained growth and can sustained doing better i keep hitting my mic here is consistency you have to be consistent and do things on a regular basis you have to take care of yourself on a regular basis you can’t wait until things get really bad and then start taking care of yourself think of it like exercise you’re exercising you’re doing real good maybe you’re even eating right and getting some pretty good shape awesome you go to the beach that summer you’re feeling good and then it starts to get a little bit colder and stop working out start eating a little bit more pizza and a lot more tacos and slowly yet surely or if you’re past 35 pretty quickly you get out of shape taking care of your mental health is very similar you have to take care of yourself all the time because if you’re like most people in the world you have things in your life that are constantly taking from you and stressing you out now if you don’t have any more stress in your life well maybe you don’t have to do it as much that’s not most of us my third tip for you is a combination of the first two of course you have to monitor yourself so you can see how you’re doing and of course you have to have a certain skill set so you know what to do in those type of situations my third tip for you is to actually take action if you see that things aren’t going so well or you hit a place in your life where you do have some more stress and those things will happen there will be times where you’re going to struggle that unfortunately is part of life i usually tell people that i work with that’s actually probably the one thing i can guarantee that something else is going to happen and you’re not going to like it but if you’ve done a successful course of treatment a lot of times you’re prepared to handle those things maybe differently than you would in the past so you have to do those things maybe you’ll fall back a little bit but when you notice that things aren’t going the way that you want them to be that’s when you have to take action and guess what you’re already prepared to do so the last thing that i want to say before i end here is sometimes when you go through a course of therapy and you fall back to where you’re struggling and you feel like you can’t necessarily get out of out of it on your own there is nothing wrong with going back to treatment nothing but dare i say maybe there is something wrong with just continuing to struggle and continuing to go down a downward spiral when you know that there is potential treatment somewhere something to think about if this video was helpful for you and i hope that it was please like it or consider subscribing to my channel if you want to learn more about ptsd and mental health but more important than that if this video was helpful for you that means it can likely be helpful for another veteran or another service member or another friend or family member of a veteran so i ask that you share it with them because at the end of the day that’s really what all this is about one veteran trying to help another

There is often a lot of anxiety when ending treatment. Many times that anxiety is linked to thoughts like “will this last?” In this video Dr. McCleary (licensed clinical psychologist and Navy Veteran) gives 3 tips to maintaining your progress after mental health treatment has ended.

Tip# 1:
Monitor you symptoms on a regular basis in other words, check in with yourself

Step 2:
Continue utilizing the skills that you learned
(Consistency is key)

Step 3:
When you notice things are “off” TAKE ACTION”

If it gets BAD return to treatment. NOTHING wrong with that
