Joe Burrow invests in mental health for Appalachian students

Joe Burrow is known for throwing winning touchdown passes, but now he and his foundation are laser focused on students mental health. As an elementary principle, I really saw the effects of um lack of access and in like very long wait times when you’re dealing with mental health and behavioral health issues. The Joe Burrow Foundation is teaming up with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Appalachin Children’s Coalition. Joe’s mom, Robin, says the goal is to take care of the mental health of southern Ohio students where help has historically been very limited. Appalachia is a very underserved area and access to care is a real challenge for families. So, it really makes sense to um really provide additional services in those school-based clinics. The Burrow Blueprint will work with 20 school districts helping with things like anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Providers will also do peer-to-peer check-ins, and we’ll consult with psychiatric experts with follow-up care if needed. It’s really important to have those school-based clinics to provide access where parents don’t have to take time off of work and students don’t have to lose instructional time. Last year, Ohio shelled out $64 million to expand healthc care access in southern Ohio. To date, five new school-based health centers have opened with 15 more expected in the next year. Joe once upon a time says everybody has the responsibility to do good. And this is just a part of of Joe and our family doing good. The Burrow Blueprint is also launching in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the other state Joe Burrow has called home, and it’ll expand to more school health centers in the future. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is making a significant impact off the field by helping to boost access to healthcare for students in Appalachian Ohio.

The game plan?

A new round of programming to support students’ mental health.

The Joe Burrow Foundation announced Tuesday that it has partnered with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Appalachian Children’s Coalition to address the mental health needs of students in southern Ohio, an area where access to care has been historically limited.

“As an elementary principal, I really saw the effects of lack of access and very long wait times when you’re dealing with mental health and behavioral health issues,” said Burrow’s mother, Robin Burrow, a former school principal.

Robin Burrow emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Appalachia is a very underserved area and access to care is a real challenge for families, so it really makes sense to really provide additional services in those school-based clinics.”

The Burrow Blueprint will collaborate with 20 school districts to address issues such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. The program will include peer-to-peer check-ins and consultations with psychiatric experts, with follow-up care if needed.

“In some cases, you know families have to choose whether they’re going to drive use their gas to go to the to take their kid to a doctor’s appointment or if they’re they’re going to be able to go to work the next day,” Robin Burrow said. “So it’s really important to have those school-based clinics to provide access where parents don’t have to take time off of work and students don’t have to lose instructional time.”

Last year, Ohio allocated $64 million to expand healthcare access in southern Ohio, resulting in the opening of five new school-based health centers, with 15 more expected in the next year.

Jimmy Burrow, Joe’s father, highlighted the family’s commitment to giving back, saying, “Joe once upon a time said everybody has the responsibility to do good, and this is just the part of Joe and our family doing good.”

The Burrow Blueprint also is set to launch in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Joe Burrow starred at LSU after he transferred from Ohio State. There are plans to expand to more school health centers in the future.
