Wake tackles students mental health needs, other concerns for new year

district is considering. >> Yeah, the Wake County School District we’re learning is working right now to place more dedicated counselors and therapists in schools. There are currently 125 schools that do have a mental health professional. The district says it is hopeful by the end of this upcoming school year, all 198 Wake County Schools will have its own dedicated therapist to help students who might need any assistance. Wake received grant money for this initiative. District leaders also discussed plans to expand a program where grief counselors provide group therapy to students experiencing loss. We additionally received an update on the ongoing partnership with Alliance Health. Educators can write referrals and help link students to needed services. We’re being told most families are now being seen within 48 hours. The district is looking to make continued mental health investments at a time the state health department is reporting suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 18, and 50% of high schoolers who were bullied reported poor mental health.
