World Teen Mental Wellness Day – Meet Dr. Carlos A. Salgado!

[Music] hi everybody my name is Dr Carlo Sado I’m a child in adolescent psychiatrist at the Center for Children and Families I am also an associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the Herbert wory College of Medicine as a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist I’m a physician that works with kids families and kids of all ages that might have concerns associated with um behaviors academic difficulties y mood sadness excessive fears worries and a whole variety of other things so at the CCF we’re able to offer Psychiatric Services now a psychiatrist and Psychiatric Services involves the biological interventions that might help kids with mental health concerns behavioral concerns educational concerns and so part of that would involve a thorough assessment as far as what all might be going on are there any contributing factors that are related to medical issues and depending on the outcome we might decide that perhaps a medication is the appropriate course of action so one common question that comes up is how do families know when their child seek out Psychiatric Services really anytime that a kiddo is having a hard time with school relationships behaviors the way they’re feeling isolating um worried just a variety of different things that are really impacting their day-to-day functioning those are all questions that might be worth being addressed by a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist and so as an example somebody who is struggling with attention and focus and takes much much longer to get their work done and they’ve had other kinds of assistance and help to try to keep get their grades up it might be that they might benefit from a medication to help with this uh common occurrence might be attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD and although there’s different kinds of interventions and things that could be helpful sometimes medications are necessary and so we would look at well what are the different options what are some of the benefits what are some of the potential secondary effects and what do we do to try to minimize those secondary effects that all in all um the child and family is able to do well with the medication and it’s able to help as as much as can be expected other um situations are conc concerns might be addressed with different kinds of medications but it all kind of depends and one big part of what we do is provide options and provide a lot of education so that you and others feel like they’re making an informed decision with regards to any potential intervention
