Part5:Morita Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder – Morita therapy & its treatment
The theme of the Mental Health & Morita Therapy Seminar Vol.2 is “Morita therapy & its treatment. ” The lecturer is Dr. Kei Nakamura (Honorary Director, Center for Morita Therapy, The Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo).
The content of the fifth session is” Morita Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.”
First, we explain how social anxiety disorder develops, quoting Shoma Morita: its essence is the fear of shame and the desire to be well-regarded. Next, we present a case of a 25-year-old woman who began avoiding meetings and note-taking after her hands trembled during a conference. Treatment starts by addressing her behavioral pattern of “I must not be nervous to succeed.” She is encouraged to act despite anxiety or symptoms.
In Morita Therapy, rather than directly eliminating each symptom, constructive actions are guided to correct rigid “should be” thinking.
