Removing the Stigma Around Mental Health | Bekah Gerace | TEDxYouth@Lancaster

At just 17 years old, Bekah has already experienced cancer and mental illness. However, she noticed a distinct difference in the way others treated her when she had her mental illness compared to her physical illness. Bekah is passionate about removing the stigma around mental illness and provides examples of how that can be done. Bekah Gerace, 17, was born and raised in Lancaster County. She recently graduated from Manheim Township High School where she participated in cross country and the suicide prevention and awareness club, Aevidum. While at Manheim Township, she participated in the Spanish Immersion program from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Through her high school years, she has faced cancer and many mental health challenges, which have helped shape her into the person she is today. Bekah enjoys writing poetry, photography, listening to music, spending time with her friends, and a number of outdoor activities, such as hiking and canoeing. Bekah is hoping to pursue a career in case management to assist those struggling with an untreated mental health diagnosis. Through her personal experiences, she is aware of the growing need for not only a change in attitude and perception, but also in the quality of care in the mental health community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
