Lasting scars: Mental health impacts of surviving Helene

When Hurricane Helene tore through western North Carolina, it left behind more than damaged homes and infrastructure. For many survivors, the storm’s most lasting impact has been on their mental health — invisible wounds that continue to affect them months later.

In Ashe County, Jeannie Berry’s home was largely spared when Helene struck, but the mental and emotional impacts were just as powerful as if it were not.
