What Do I Think About Life Coaches?

Today’s video addresses life coaches and my thoughts on what they do. Here’s the question I answer: Hi Kati! I think an interesting video would be your thoughts on life coaching. I’m seeing this sprout up more and more and I wonder how therapists feel about this trend.

  1. My previous therapist was a college student in a master’s counseling program. She was open to allowing me to use her services as I saw fit. Therapists I’ve seen in the past were focused on talking childhood trauma, but it made me feel like I was indulging in venting and “talking it out” while not taking much action to get things done that I needed to get done. During a Zoom session with my last therapist, she allowed me to clean my apartment as she provided moral support. Without her support, I would have told my therapist I’d clean my apartment (and other things I was needed to do) only to procrastinate. She was a sort of a life coach therapist hybrid who gave me goal assignments that she held me accountable to carry out. I didn’t want to disappoint her, so I was mostly on top of doing what I said I’d
    do.

  2. Currently finishing up my certification and appreciate your take. I've always been one that people come to for help/advice, but I'm new to the actual side of coaching, and this helps me feel reassured that I have chosen the right path.

  4. Life coaches remind me of two sayings I've heard in my life. The first one came from an economics teacher I had while going to Community College. He said a person who claims to know everything knows nothing and the second phrase is a classic jack of all trades master of none

  5. Respectfully, therapists look to the past to explain the today. Life coaches look to today and support to make the best of the future.

  6. The difference between a life coach and therapist is that a therapist digs in your past to try and fix your past traumas.. where a life coach gives you new perspectives to overcome barriers you may have for your FUTURE.. therapist are people that go to college for a degree that most have no life experiences that relate to the clients.. life coaches are more likely to relate and have overcame what the client is going through.. you express certifications like thats the big point.. life experiences IS the certification.. i bet as a therapist, theres very little that you can relate to your client and are only giving advice from your books.. me personally, i would rather hear from someone who has experience not training..

  7. One glaring contradiction in your talk. (1) As in every job there are some who are just no good at it. That's a fact. A sad fact of life. (2) Go get a life coach. IT CAN ONLY HELP. (3) Say what ?????? Do you see it ???? If they stink at their job and go against what a psychologist says ????? It will not help. (4) But i do support your overall message. The search . . . even if rocky as hell . . . will make you stronger.

  8. As someone who's training to be a certified Life coach I agree with all you say, and first off one of the rules I am being taught is that a life coach is but a life coach, not an adviser, a therapist, a counsellor, or a doctor of any sort, and as an ethical life coach you are there to act in the client 's best interests. If they are working with any other professionals you do not discourage the client you try and work with that professional, or if you feel a client may need the help of a counsellor a therapist or another professional you gently bring this to the client that you are unable to help them then encourage him/her to consider speaking to a medical doctor who may be able to advise them of other professionals to deal with the issues they have so they can once again be their best then after their issues are resolved if they then wish to continue coaching you may as a coach continue.

  9. You are right we as life coaches refer people for serious mental health issues. After Mental health issues are sort of resolved then Coaching comes in. We are not therapists and Life coaches primarily work with individuals to help them achieve their personal and professional goals, enhance their overall happiness and well-being, and navigate through life transitions. They use various tools and techniques, including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), positive psychology, goal setting, and mindset coaching, to empower their clients. The focus is on identifying and breaking through limiting beliefs, clarifying values, improving relationships, and fostering personal growth. Each coaching session is tailored to the client's specific needs and aspirations, aiming to bring about positive and lasting changes in their lives.

  10. I have an MSE in education. Everything is so incredibly regulated. There is no real need for coaching certification. At least not in my state. Really. I think it’s super annoying and a big scam to have to be qualified in everything. The states always want their cut. When In reality personal experience and wisdom from someone who is of an analytical mind, That they can see something from several different perspectives is best to have at ur side. I have worked in the teaching field and some of them are completely nuts yet think they are god gift to education. A lot of the women teachers are super pathetic when it comes to life choices in men and making quick decisions with wanting to fit the mold. Have to get married make babies fast and fit in. I know several women who have selected bums to support. Teachers to me are one of the dumbest group of people on the planet. My mom didn’t even finish her high school diploma. She was so incredibly quick witted about relationships and money, money management, motherhood, how to deal with people. She didn’t finish high school because she was going to get the paddle. So I asked her one day when I was working at the college. I said hey ma, u wanna get ur GED. She scoffed and said what for. I’m already a millionaire. Lol. Of course never living lavishly u will go through any money u make. But my aunt who grew up in the rice fields of her country can’t let a dime go either. These women will die and with all this money. And not a days worth of college or diploma. College is overrated. It’s all a way to make u get into debt fast and drown before u can get started. Mom was a full time house wife, stay at home mother, and business owner. She was the boss in every Avenue of her life and died like a Queen on a thrown. So did college make her street smart? College is t worth the toilet paper or any certificate if u fail to have common sense and street smarts. Also therapist can push their own bias opinions and agendas as much as anyone else. My therapist sister was just working for a complete lunatic. And she’s a social worker. The nut job was crazy. I think after a while. Therapist go crazy too. How can u avoid it. U are a dumping ground for problems all day long. I was about to be a therapist too but I switched majors last minute. And quiet frankly I rather just get my feet wet at life coach. My experience I have so much to offer. I laugh when I see people going to therapist younger then the client. It’s like what kind of experience do u really have to offer little moss fresh out of college.

  11. I'm interested in becoming a state-registered life coach in the form of a QMHP-A in the state of Virginia and working in tandem with licensed professional counselors and therapists.

  12. "Mental illness" is the modern take on therapy, the Disease Model. Used to call them "Mental Disorder" (which CBT is amazing at addressing in terms of evidenced based intervention), but Big Pharma wants their slice of the pie so the Disease Model reigns supreme! IMO.

  13. When I discovered life coaches it was kind of odd because it seemed to be only life coaches coaching other coaches, and selling courses to each other. It was like a pyramid scheme that life coaches had createed

  14. Some can't get paid internships – it's a 5% chance unless the program you have is already equipped. A person can't sit for an exam they can't train for. Research says 50% chance therapy is successful. DSM is a medical manual. Therapy is not a medical job.

  15. Certification not at all required and it doesn't make you the good or experienced life coach. What it takes is to have helful nature from the heart, non-judgemental approach. But yes as you mentioned there are good life coaches and there are bad coaches who doesn't think at all. A good life coach always suggest psychology professional when it is a case of mental illness.

  16. I agree it’s nice to be certified but the best therapist some people could ever have or people who are less certified on paper and have more life experiences and empathy for people

  17. They dont teach u “life” in schools. Nor any certification can warrant success in helping other people to navigate their life issues. I think. Lol

  18. I am a life coach and pursuing a masters in psychology to expand my knowledge, I honestly feel it's about the person rather than their "certification" cause I have had bad experiences with both therapists and life coaches on the other hand great ones too, so trust your gut and body, stick with the person that feels safe 💕❤

  19. It’s not about giving advice. Life coaches help clients reach their goals. (Getting unstuck, start over after divorce, prepare for marriage/ a leadership position, loose weight, start their business, etc. (Depending on the type of coach you need).

It’s a partnership where the client has to do their part. The coach helps reveal hidden barriers to provide support and resources to help you move forward towards in life and achieve whatever goal you have.

If the coach realizes the client has serious mental health concerns, the coach should recommend a counselor or therapist. Both therapist/ counselor and coach can work together (every case is different).

Some people are called to be life coaches and are anointed and some are not. Just as every career.

A life coach is NOT a replacement for a counselor or therapist. Some may need to start with a counselor/therapist first.

  20. My therapist manipulated me into a 14 year trauma bond. She nearly destroyed me. I am seeing a trauma informed holistic life coach now and am Much happier.

  21. To me psychology for mental health can mess up the mind. A mental health person can be on medication and the mind is dulled when having therapy. A therapist can get a one sided view of a person's issue, place their own values and opinions to what is said and therefore can make a wrong health diagnosis. Therapy can focus on the past, bringing negativity to a client, when the past has gone. Looking to the present, planning into the future, and working to achieve goals towards a desired outcome, is far better than sitting in a room recalling and voicing life's challenges and misery long past. I prefer life coaching and believe less medication, less psychology keeping one stagnant in the past, and more life coaching in mental health hospitals and other, would greatly enhance the well being of mental health. I see, medications, psychology, provides little hope. Life coaching, gives back personal power, self esteem, which can be long term. Spiritualist churches also aid mental health, for a lot of people said to have mental health are actually psychic and spirit aware, and need to learn how to balance and protect their personal energy. More life coaching, learning about energy, and life's wisdom, taking positive action to achieve goals, over counselling, psychology I'd say is best for most. Yes there can be cases of brainwashing and horrific events to which psychology might be helpful, but on the whole it depends on who is the therapist. Yes! to life coaching and life's universal wisdom.

  22. Therapist usually focus on the past trauma's and issues (how did I get here), whereas coaches focus on helping you to achieve your goals forward (where do I want to go). Life coaches don't usually give you the answer to your problem. We use questioning techniques to draw out what is already in you to reach your goals. It's like letting go of the back of a bike and allowing a person to FIND their balance. I think every person should have a therapist in one pocket and a coach in another pocket. The therapist to help solve past traumas that affect your present life, and a coach to empower you to move forward into your next life goals. Hope that helps. As a CERTIFIED Coach I get this question all the time 🙂
