What to Expect During Your First Therapy Session | Kati Morton

Seeing a Therapist for the first time can be (but shouldn’t be) stressful. Some of the questions you might be wondering about are: What do you do at your first therapy session? What questions does a therapist ask? What should I not tell my therapist? Is it okay to cry in therapy? How much should you tell your therapist? What should you tell your first visit to a therapist? How should a therapy session go? Can therapists tell our parents anything?

I’m Kati Morton, a licensed therapist making Mental Health videos!

Here's the thing…. I feel like it is a huge disservice to separate the term "mental health" from "physical health". Not only because it's one of the reasons why "mental health" is still a concept shrouded in mystery for many people, but because mental health IS your physical health.
It gives the impression that people can will themselves out of psychiatric conditions any more than they can will themselves out of colorblindness.
Admitting that they are the same thing does not mean that medication is always the treatment (just like lifestyle modifications alone can also sometimes improve hypertension and hypercholesterolemia), but in my opinion, separating the two only serves to perpetuate stigma via confusion.

  2. Am i wrong for feeling upset that the therapy im getting is solo and family therapy? I dont have family issues, well maybe they are a little emotionally unavailable, but my parents arent the reason i feel the way i do! I feel like the faimly part wont do anything for me, except make me shut down and have a meltdown because i dont want to talk about anything, even the things they alr know, infront of them. For me it defeats the purpose of therapy, to have an adult to talk to other than my parents about my issues. And i think ill have a difficult time trusting her during the solo sessions, as with half of the sessions being family it makes it much harder to believe anything i say is truly confidential

  3. My advice. Write down on a small piece of paper the topics you don't wish to discuss and when the therapist asks a question refer to it before you answer. That way you won't end up discussing things you don't want to. It works for me…every time.

  4. very nervous for mine. i was raised with the idea everyone deals with these feelings and if they can manage it, i should too.. im also 18, so what could i know? lol

  5. My first appointment is next week and am so nervous I want to throw up and vibrating out of my skin just tho I about it. I’ve already cancelled once.

  6. It's been happening for eternity and I thought I was unreasonably exaggerating because people won't let me tell them what is really happening to me!

  7. I have been to couple appointments now and i feel nothing changed and even the conversations dont feel productive. Now every week he just asks me wat i experience that week and just listens. Idk if i need to change my therapist or if this actually is therapy. Cause i feel like i rather game for that one hour then just speak with no result paying a huge price for that hourZ they earn alottttt like 350 euro a hourrrrr, and all they do is listen

  8. I had my first therapy appointment 2 days ago. The therapist talked about himself and his anxiety the whole time. He told me techniques that worked for him, but not for me and I politely pointed that out. He then started tracing a pencil across his scalp for the remainder of the session to soothe himself. It was the strangest encounter I've ever had with another human being. (Yes, I'm switching to a different therapist.)

  9. Kati Morton: What brought you in today?
Kati Morton: Well…sometimes I dress up in two different outfits and talk to myself as if I was two different people…
