Is the US facing a mental health crisis? Well let me see… it's citizens slaughter each other in streets, in many cases quite legally; about every 8 or 9 weeks someone with a mental illness commits a mass murder, often of children and their teachers; many of its citizens believe that nuclear war will bring on the "End Times" and the return of Jesus; many of its citizens believe that Satan walks among them in human form, most prominently Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia. I could go on ad infinitum, ad nauseum with emphasis on the 'nauseum'.
I came here thinking there would be an honest talk about the mental health crisis, yet two minutes in it's just more lame @$$ gun control.
You want to help end this kind of violence? First you need to expand mental health services and offer more robust insurance. Then you need to De-stigmatize mental health issues. Remove penalties and drawbacks of having mental illness and seeking help, currently you can find yourself permanently stripped of your rights or put on a prohibitive list as a threat/risk if you seek the help you may or may not need. You need to empower the parents of adult children, make it easier for parents to seek (mentally or drug addiction) help for the child who is over the age of 18 (more than 24 hour observation) without penalizing or prosecuting the ill person (lot of parents don't seek help out of fear doing so will result in their adult child being tossed in the prison system). Lastly the media needs to stop providing this platform, these people are killing for the recognition, notorious as it may be. Don't post their names and photos and don't report on it for months on end. Look at Lanza who printed off clippings of other mass murderers and school shootings, he was doing it for notoriety. And the 24 hour media provides them the lime light so people just like them copy cat the crime. Look at the knockout game coverage, it gets reported and what happens? It occurs more….. Same thing.
Of course we are uncomfortable with doctors being able to imprison us! Just look at the way our police are treating civilians like enemy combatants!! I agree with a background checks but our government is hurting its own legitimacy. GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS! THEN YOU WILL HAVE POLITICIANS THAT ACTUALLY WANT TO WORK FOR THEIR CONSTITUENTS.
I think its funny how the ones that are claiming folks are mentally are the same ones stuck inside of the mental matrix being programmed by the tv and internet. If you can't recognize that you are taking your marching orders from the mainstream media and white house propaganda program that they spend billions on then you are mentally ill. Most don't want to except the fact that they dress the way they do, eat what they eat, talk the way they talk and believe the things they believe because of this programming. When we drone and kill families and children in other countries, it's "collateral damage"… The mentally ill deserve the same rights as everyone, but I think there should be a psychological evaluation required to own/posses a gun.
